Present Perfect vs. Past Simple

January 20, 2026 By English App Team

The difference between Present Perfect and Past Simple is often subtle but crucial.

Past Simple

Use Past Simple for actions that finished at a specific time in the past.

  • I visited London last year. (It's done, and we know when)

Present Perfect

Use Present Perfect for actions that happened at an unspecified time or have a connection to the present.

  • I have visited London. (Experience matters, not when)
  • I have lost my keys. (I still don't have them now)
